Independence Through Healthy Living

“She says she wants to keep living in her home. We say it starts by keeping her on her feet.”

Many people believe that once you reach a ‘certain age’ it’s time to slow down. They say less physical activity is better, even safer. I don’t think anyone who said that was over the age of 60! That’s not to say that physical activity doesn’t get more challenging with age, but one thing is for sure – healthy living in our elder years is paramount to keeping our independence.

Remember Art Linkletter? He was the original host of a TV show called Kids Say the Darndest Things. He said, “Old age isn’t for sissies!”

I think he was right. But life isn’t for sissies either!

Did you know?

  • 70% of accidental deaths in people over the age of 75 are the result of a fall.
  • 40 % of all nursing home admissions are attributable to repeated falls at home.
  • 25% of seniors who suffer hip fractures die within one year.

Many of these occurrences are due to balance and gait issues, as well as osteoporosis. So, staying on your feet is a major factor in staying healthy and independent. It only makes sense to do what you can to keep fit. It will give you the strength to stand, strength to prevent a fall and reduce spine irritation and back pain. Oh, and let’s dispel a common myth:

You CAN build muscle at ANY age!

One of the best resources we have found to help you get fit and stay independent is a publication from the National Institute on Aging called, Your Everyday Guide – Exercise & Physical Activity. Download your copy to get started.

Physical activity is a great way to have fun, be with friends and family, enjoy the outdoors, improve your fitness for your favorite sport and maintain your independence. Make it a lifelong habit!

Our city offers so many ways to get and stay physically active. With summer upon us why not start today?
