Time to Rethink Aging

Midnight Sun Home Care, a top Alaska home care provider, points out the many positives to aging.

A simple internet search for the word “aging” gives results such as “coping with aging,” “what you can do about aging,” and “the cure to aging.” The negative view to growing older is, unfortunately, so embedded within our society that it is estimated that by 2021, we will be spending over $300 billion in anti-aging products.

Though it is easy to see the numerous challenges which may occur as we age – health issues, the passing of family and friends, and cognitive issues – what is being overlooked are the numerous positives of aging. For example consider:

  • A recent study by Stony Brook University showed that elderly adults are much happier overall, with reportedly decreasing feelings of irritation and anxiety in old age.
  • Socialization and conflict resolution skills are far better in old age, reported by research carried out by the University of Michigan.
  • In a game focused on triggering and analyzing regret, older participants outperformed the younger participants in the ability to handle and cope with emotions.
  • Cornell sociologist Karl Pillemer, who surveyed 1,200 older adults, reported that the opinion was that the past 5 or 10 years were the most enjoyable and memorable of their lives. “Many people said something along these lines: ‘I wish I’d learned to enjoy life on a daily basis and enjoy the moment when I was in my 30s instead of my 60s,’” Pillemer states.

Also, retired adults have the freedom to explore and recognize hobbies and skills without the time restrictions of younger adults who are working.  This can frequently bring about a renewed zest for life, new social ties, and improved bonds with current family and friends.

Midnight Sun Home Care, a top Alaska home care provider, helps point out the advantages of the aging journey in many ways.
